Modern Farmhouse from Outdated Colonial

Modern Farmhouse from Outdated Colonial

Beams for support and style

Transforming this outdated colonial to a stunning modern farmhouse required lots of structural changes. Navigating the low ceilings in this home brought us to remove the bedroom above the kitchen and open up the space to the second floor. Installing two large beams offers substantial support along with the farmhouse flair the clients were seeking. Door and window locations made reorganizing the layout a challenge. Thankfully, the existing layout proved to be functional. The addition of an island maximizes seating and storage in this otherwise small space.

Breaking down barriers

However, In order to add the island, the entire wall separating the kitchen from the living room had to be removed. Along with the dual-sided brick chimney that went through the first and second floors and the attic. No small feat, but the process went smoothly and made quite the impact on the layout.

A pendant light hung from one beam, centered over the island, adds accent lighting. Task recessed lighting was placed in the second story ceiling above the kitchen. Likewise, adding undercabinet and toe kick lighting provides additional task and mood lighting options.

Farmhouse features

Using a refrigerator cabinet at 21″ depth creates an area for the vent hood to be both functional and fashionable. Trimming the cabinet with the stained material ties together the dual color cabinet combination.

Naturally, we chose a standard white porcelain farmhouse sink. To further the aesthetic, we complimented with black fixtures.
