Making Moves

Situated in a one hundred year old Dutch Colonial, this design portrays a traditional style with a modern flair. The transformation this kitchen took over the course of the project was substantial. Moving entry doors and relocating appliances and plumbing made for some in depth work, which was well worth it in the end. Our client wanted more function than what their space had to offer. Removing a peninsula and opting for an island helped open the space and allow more flow.

Traditional Details

The soft white upper cabinets were the perfect pair to the beautiful light stained cherry base and island pieces. An added bead to the center panel provided a traditional edge to an otherwise modern door style. Oil rubbed bronze hardware became the perfect accent against both cabinet finishes. The rich, creamy, light colored countertops flushed with taupes, browns and greys was the icing on the cake, tying in each piece of the design.

Function Always Meets Fashion

This kitchen is every part functional as it is fashionable. Decorative transoms at the top were met with hidden storage accessories in the bases. In the cooking zone we made room for cookware, utensil and small appliance storage. Using an accent tile, an area of interest was added to the wall behind the cooktop. This offers a break in the backsplash, and is a perfect focal point as guests enter the kitchen from the front of the house.

Keeping the large window was a must, especially given it was the only window in the kitchen. Moving the window to the left a few feet was no problem given the flexibility of the layout. The versatility of the apron front sink allows its design to mesh almost anywhere, and here was the perfect space. In between two styles, it seems to bring them both together.
